It is indeed true (reading further on in the manga) that Deidara does not kill Gaara. =D The old lady saved Gaara with her own life and he lives despite not having Shukaku's power. I think this is a good thing however because so far it appears to me that Kyubi and Shukaku were killing their owners by destroying cells within them.
